The Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies

Outline

An Austrian Think Tank for first hand expertise
on Central and Eastern Europe,
CIS and Balkans

Established in 1973 as an independent research institute wiiw is specialized in the analysis of economic developments in Central, East and Southeast Europe. The institute is financially supported by the Austrian government, the Austrian National Bank, the City of Vienna as well as Austrian corporate institutions. The Institute's own earnings (approx. half of its total budget) come from research projects, commissioned work, consultancies and membership fees.

Since the nineties, the institute has been principally engaged in transition economics and policy advice.

In research the main focus lies on the analysis and forecasting of economic developments of Central, East and Southeast European economies, the analysis of structural developments in these countries (e.g. structural change in manufacturing, in labor markets, in agriculture; analysis of competitiveness, foreign trade specialization), the European integration process and research related to the reconstruction and stabilization in Southeast Europe – including policy advice and technical assistance.

As of 2004 wiiw experts are engaged in economic policy advise to the President of the Republic of Croatia, the Government of Serbia and the President of the Republic of Macedonia. wiiw is regularly present in the public debate on policy issues in the region and the institute's findings are widely cited in the media. Together with the Belgrade Centre for European Integration wiiw publishes a bi-monthly internet journal, "European Balkan Observer".

As a partner institute in the Global Development Network initiated by the World Bank, wiiw acts as a hub for Southeast Europe (SEE). In this capacity wiiw supports the enhancement of economic research in the region, establishes research networks, conducts joint projects with SEE researchers, organizes workshops and public policy discussions and assists in securing knowledge transfer from researchers to policy makers.

Currently, wiiw is also partner in several EU-funded research networks and executes research under a service contract with EU DG Employment. Other research relations include UNIDO, UNCTAD, OECD and EIB.
