International and Foreign Policy Studies at Giessen University are offered by one out of six professors and are part of the Bachelor (BA)- and Master in Social Science (MA) Programme and the traditional German study programmes (Diplom-Sozialwissenschaften, Magister, L3). According to the German system, it offers tailor-made Ph.D. projects (currently around 15) organised in research projects and its own Ph.D. special programme. The specific profile of International and Foreign Policy studies at Giessen are characterised by its strong policy orientation (“Praxisorientierung”), its international cooperation (for example, with Central Asia, Indonesia, China, Brazil plus major EU research and exchange projects), and its research orientation (transformation analysis, peace, conflict and security studies, integration and regionalisation, theory of international relations). International and Foreign Policy studies at Giessen cooperate closely with European Studies at Giessen (represented by a Jean-Monnet-Chair), the Giessen Centre for Eastern European Studies, and the Giessen Centre for Environment and Development Studies.
